What I Instagrammed vs What I Was Actually Doing...

A couple of months ago I read an article on Bustle about Instagram and how our pictures don't accurately reflect what we were doing at the time the photograph was taken. I think it's fair to assume that the majority of us use Instagram, it's probably (in my case anyway) also fair to say that on a daily basis the majority of us, in reality, just eat our weight in pasta while sitting in our pants watching Friends repeats. Am I righhht? I thought so.

With that in mind, here are my Instagram confessions, if you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?! You can laugh at me.

THE 'I WOKE UP LIKE THIS' SELFIE

INSTAGRAM: I wake up looking this pouty every god damn day. I literally opened my eyes, sat up in my white fresh bedding, looked into my camera, which was on hand (obviously) and took a little selfie. Nothing major. Beyonce ain't got nothing on me. #flawless

REALITY: Truth be told, I had just woken up when I took this photograph. What I didn't tell you though, was that this was number 48 of 48 other photo's I had taken before settling on this particular shot. Oh the shame. I pouted too.

THE DIY SHOT

INSTAGRAM: Oh another creative day whipping up my very own Lime & Coconut Sugar Scrub. I happened to have all of the ingredients and decor lying around my Pinterest worthy kitchen and I plan to use it later before going out to a fancy pants restaurant with my beau. I smell like coconuts and lime constantly. Link to original post - here.

REALITY: This. Took. Hours. Firstly, I realised I didn't even have any Limes and when I'd finally got all of the ingredients, I didn't have anything to put it in. Cue frantically emptying pasta sauce jars and destroying anything I could find to salvage the rope. I did use it, and then later, I ate a little bit of it. I have no regrets people.

 THE INTERESTING EXPLORER SHOT

INSTAGRAM: Just the essentials for a last minute road trip to Amsterdam. I was packing these bits that happened to be perfectly arranged on my floor into my Celine handbag (pah ha) and thought 'hey everybody needs to see this' because, well, just look at my cool hat.

REALITY: Staged, oh so staged. But pretty, and putting things together in a pretty fashion is pleasing and pretty. Did I mention pretty? Taking this photo made me late...

THE 'I DO YOGA EVERY DAY' POST

INSTAGRAM: I keep my favourite Yoga book on my bedside table as I like to read up on the different postures while burning incense that smell like green tea and mahogany. I always have fresh flowers too, it's important to keep my room balanced and zen for practising my Ardha-sirsasana.

REALITY: I had to stand on my bed whilst balancing on my window ledge to take this and I definitely didn't do yoga afterwards. I also had to move the incense burner from my bedside table because it makes me sneeze. #lols

THE ACTIVE SELFIE

INSTAGRAM: Just casually out on the weekly hike, I'm completely at one with the forest and nature and I like to document my active life with a spare of the moment selfie. I'm so outdoorsy.

REALITY: I was on a hike with my boyfriend and it was raining, a lot. This picture was the result of me trying, discretely I might add, to take a picture without looking like a complete arse and trying not to get completely soaked whilst doing it.

THE DREAM HOLIDAY SHOT

INSTAGRAM: My life is so dreamy. I'm currently sat in a private cabana, drinking an ice cold beer and watching the sea roll in and out. Oh and my tan is coming on great, I'm so olive and glowing. I'm also going scuba diving later.

REALITY: I was absolutely freezing when I took this photograph. It might look glorious, but I can assure you it was not. I had to sit in the shade the whole time because it was crazy windy and my book kept flapping everywhere. I came home paler than I went.

You can follow my Instagram here, and please leave me some comments giving me some of your confessions. I know you've got em'.

  1. I love this so much! I always subconsciously compare my life to other people's based on their "perfect" online pictures. It's important to show people the reality of the effort it takes to look effortless!

    Such a wonderful idea. :)

  5. I think this is something a lot of us bloggers are guilty of. We're interested in fashion and lifestyle so we really absorb what the magazines are showing, but we want to portray the "real life" version of that but still keep a level of glamour so a lot of go out of their way to take attractive photos to make it seem like we have the perfect life. It's not something that's horrible, but it's a nice, fresh perspective when you do posts like this. It was hilarious, but oh so true! Keep up the good work, looking forward to more of your content.

  7. Hahahaha! I love this - I must confess that I stage my instagram photos most of the time too. I even arrange my food differently when I know I'm going to instagram it! #awkward!
